VW, the world’s second largest automaker, asked us to create a unique Android app that connects a driver’s phone to the VW’s infotainment system, enabling them to create a soundtrack tailored to their unique driving style.

CHALLENGE

VW needed help with the user and visual experiences for Sound Journey. We were asked to design an experience that works seamlessly on both phone and vehicle interfaces. Using the Android app, drivers and passengers can produce, record and share their music from inside the car, while challenges allow them to earn fun badges. This provided a fun, new way for drivers to jam out to their favorite songs.

IDEA

This was a dream assignment for us because we’re proud music geeks and even prouder data viz geeks (yes, it’s a thing.) We programmed the app so it would change the music on the fly in response to data including car speed, steering wheel angle, acceleration and the tightness of your leather pants (just kidding about the last one.) Co-pilots could play a game and use drum machines to rock out while earning badges. We created the entire visual system, including beautiful typography, iconography and background animation. Oh, and one more thing...users could record 30-second clips of and share them on SoundCloud.

RESULTS

Sound Journey has been downloaded almost 10,000 times from the Google Play store, and it received rave reviews from VW drivers and passengers. We were also excited to see that the technology was featured in a Bjork retrospective at New York’s MoMA where her songs responded to the movement of museum visitors.
